Ice time & deployment

Total minutes played per game or season — the clearest sign of how much a coach trusts a player.

Note. TOI alone says nothing about quality. Always pair it with role context such as zone starts, teammates, and competition.

Time on ice at five-on-five only. It is more diagnostic than total TOI because it isolates performance away from special teams effects.

Note. EV TOI is the base for most per-60 rate stats and the usual filter for leaderboard eligibility.

Minutes played on the man advantage. High PP TOI will inflate counting stats, so strip it out when you want a cleaner even-strength evaluation.

Minutes on the penalty kill. PK specialists often show weaker raw possession numbers simply because of the situations they are asked to handle.

The share of a player’s faceoffs that begin in the offensive zone. High OZ% usually indicates favorable deployment and tends to inflate counting stats.

Note. A player with 65% OZ starts will usually generate more shots and points than an otherwise similar player starting near 40%.

The share of faceoffs starting in the defensive zone. High DZ% signals a more difficult usage profile and a more defensive role.

The share of faceoffs starting at center ice. High NZ% often reflects controlled matchup usage or defensive specialist deployment.

Total number of shifts per game. With TOI, it shows average shift length and how a coach manages the bench.

Average time on ice per shift, in seconds. Very long shifts can signal fatigue, poor change discipline, or lack of depth.
