Expected goals (xG)

The sum of expected goal values for all on-ice shot attempts generated by a player’s team. It reflects the cumulative quality of scoring chances created.

Note. xGF is a running total, not a per-shot grade. A player involved in 2.5 xGF in 20 minutes has been part of genuinely dangerous offense whether those shots scored or not.

The sum of expected goal values for all on-ice shot attempts allowed by a player’s team. It measures the cumulative danger surrendered.

xGF divided by total on-ice expected goals. It is the single best high-level stat for measuring process quality because it combines shot volume and shot quality.

Note. xGF% above 52% is strong. Above 55% at five-on-five over a full season is elite, and below 47% usually signals real process issues.

The sum of expected goal values for a specific player’s own shot attempts rather than the whole team’s on-ice total. It measures personal shot quality.

Note. ixG helps separate individual finishing opportunity from line-level environment.

Individual expected goals normalized to 60 minutes of ice time. It is one of the cleanest rate measures of personal scoring threat.

Actual goals minus individual expected goals. Positive values indicate a player is finishing above expectation, while negative values point to underperformance or bad luck.

Note. G−xG tends to revert toward zero over long samples. It is better used as an overperformance signal than as a stable talent measure.

On-ice xGF% minus the team’s xGF% when the player is off the ice. It is a strong way to isolate contribution from team context.

Average expected goal value per shot generated. It measures average shot quality rather than total volume.
